Operative Risks for the implantation of shoulder prosthesis
E-Mail: si@shoulderprosthesis.com

There are general risks that exist in every operation, like the possibility of an infection that may lead to several follow up operations and in rare cases to the explantation, change or loss of the prosthesis until to an arthrodesis. In comparison to operations at the lower limb the rate of thrombosis and embolic events is much less operating on the arm. During the operation a blood loss can occur.

Specials risks for the implantation of artificial shoulder joints are nerve lesions, especially of the axillary nerve that may impair the sensitivity or motoric function of the shoulder temporary or for ever. The loosening of the artificial joint might be an other problem. Today it is assumed that about 95% of the artificial shoulders are intact after 10 years and 80% after 15 years. Loosening of the glenoid socket occurs often earlier. A fracture of the bone ( mostly at the humeral shaft ) may occur, e.g. due to bad bone quality. A special prostheses with a longer stem and / or osteosynthesis can solve this problem. A further problem might develop because of a dislocation of the shoulder prosthesis, which for example can develop because of bad soft tissue structures or other individual factors.

The above mentioned risks are rare and you should discuss your individual situation with your surgeon.
